Research Abstract |
The purpose of the study was to clarify the factors contributing to tolerance for human diversity among Japanese children and adolescents in comparison with Chinese and American counterparts. To this end, Questionnaires were administered to fourth, seventh, and tenth graders in Japan, China, and the United States. The following hypotheses were tested in the recent study: 1.Trust of self and trust of others is associated with hope, which, in turn, is associated with tolerance for human diversity. Hope is not associated only with trust of others, but with the combination of self-trust and other-trust. 2.Hope scores for Japanese children and adolescents, which closely related to tolerance for human diversity. are lower than those of their peers in other cultures. The low hope scores among Japanese youth are related to low levels of self-trust. 3.If these hypotheses are correct, the way to foster tolerance for human diversity in Japanese children and adolescents is to promote self-trust. In conclusion, the task in Japan is to learn how to encourage self-trust in Japanese youth.
