Research Abstract

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the transformation process of the social structure during Yayoi period as seen from settlement cemetery, ritual and pottery.
I aimed at the organization principles of social groups, the relationships between social groups reflected in the structure and the diffusion of pottery styles, and values which were holded in common of members reflected in the communal rites. I analyzed the trajectory of these phenomenon in time and space and integrated the results of the analysis. I made clear the transformation of the whole social structure and the changing phase of political and cultural relationships between social groups.
I examined the estimation of huge moated and embanked settlements, and re-examined the concepts of ackerburgerstadt, concentrated dwelling into the city, division of labor during farmers slack season, full time specialists. I concluded the unsuitableness of the concept of Yayoi city.
I analyzed the time trajectory of spatial relationships between pottery styles, and transition of relationships between social groups as seen from distributions of pottery styles. I synthesized the results of this analysis with the transformation of organization principles of social groups, and obtained the perspectives to elucidate the transformations of whole structures of the society, and changing aspects of relationships between political and cultural between social groups.

I elucidated the reason of this phenomenon by means of making clear both external and internal factors of social changes since the stabilization of Yayoi society as the early agricultural society to the end of Yayoi period.
