Research Abstract

Classifier is very important for Japanese quantitative expression. Research results in the term of project are as follows.
1. The project researched synthetically on the ancient Japanese numeral classifiers in the 8th century A.D.
2. The material for the study are the Documents of Shosoin and the wooden tablets from the ancient capitals of Japan.
3. The project researched the usege of classifiers which counted foods, kinds of clothes, various vegetables, ships, Buddhist statues, Buddist flags, brush-pens, desks, screens and so on.
4. As a result of the research, the project found that Japanese numeral classifiers were introduced with Cinese correspondence administration from the Tang dynasty in 7th century.
5. On one side, the project suppose there were some classifiers through Korea. This type of classifier was old.
At last, the project thanks the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research.
