The research works carried out in this year are summarized into following two categories.
(1)Study on itinerant-electron metamagnetism
By extending the previous theory of itinerant-electron metamagnetism, the metamagnetic transitions in an itinerant-electron system were studied by taking into account the effects of spin fluctuations and volume magneto-strictions, and compared with observed results for many intermetallic compounds. The peculiar magnetic properties observed in the compounds are explained by the present theory. This theory was also applied to the giant magnetocaloric effect observed in some transition-metal compounds. These works have been presented at the international conference and symposium held at Rome in Italy and at Toulouse in France. Moreover, the metamagnetic transition for (Sc, Ca)Co_2 was predicted by the first principle band calculation, and the peculiar magnetic properties for Y(Co, Ni)_5 were observed and analyzed by the theory mentioned above.
(2)Study on magnetism of FeSi and FeGe with B20-type structure
Magnetic properties of FeSi and Fete are very different from each other, although they are same lattice structure and isoelectric material. We study the difference of magnetism in FeSi and FeGe, by performing the first-principle band calculation. It was found that a little difference in the shape of the density-of-states at the Fermi level gives such a difference between magnetic properties. The anomalous temperature dependence of susceptibility observed in FeSi was explained by using the theory of the itinerant-electron metamagnetism given (1) and the calculated density-of-states curve.
