Research Abstract |
The purpose of study is to investigate the actual characteristics of ship waves in river channels and to develop the method of numerical simulations so as to be applicable to the region of arbitrary water depth. First, characteristics of ship waves in a narrow channel restricted by vertical walls have been investigated on the basis of results by field observations and numerical simulations. At the observation site, relatively strong current exists. Waves generated by the ship traveling upstream against current become larger than waves by the ship river channel have been carried out. A method to estimate the maximum wave height in ship waves on the shoal has been proposed. The transformation by shoaling and refraction of ship waves on a straight slope is also discussed on the basis of results of numerical simulations. The method of numerical simulations of ship waves has been extended to be applicable to the region of variable water depth not only in the cross section of channel but also in the direction of ship sailing. An example of the application is shown for ship wave transformation on a submerged shoal that exists locally along the vertical bank. As to wave damping by breaking, a method to evaluate the kinetic eddy viscosity by the thickness of surface roller has been proposed. By comparison with experimental results, the calculation method of wave damping is calibrated for various constants included in the model, although the condition is one-dimensional for ordinary regular waves. The method is applied to the condition of the field observations for the shoal. The agreement between the observed maximum wave height of ship waves and the calculated wave height is fairy well.
