Research Abstract |
The surface tension of the molten Ni, Si and Ni-Based superalloys were measured using an oscillating drop method and an improved sessile drop method. In two methods, samples were cut from same parent material and the environmental gas was Ar-3%H2 purified by Pt asbestos and magnesium perchlorate. The oscillating drop method was carried out under microgravity so that the simple surface oscillation can be obtained. The value was measured over a wide temperature range including undercooling state. In the sessile drop method, the symmetry of a sample droplet was confirmed by observing from two directions, and the sharp images were obtained by combination of He-Ne lasers, band-pass filters and high-resolution digital cameras. Reliability of the oscillating drop method was confirmed by comparing the results of the two methods.
