Research Abstract |
The results obtained by the research project are as follows ; 1) The swimming ability of two fishes, loach and crucian carp that represent freshwater fishes in rice paddy area, were evaluated by using a pipeline apparatus. 2) The physical requirements for upward migration of two freshwater fishes at the Cascade-X type fishway were clarified through the laboratory test. 3) The effects of re-connected four water zones by small scale fishways, namely river zone, canal zone, earth-lined ditch and paddy field, on fish fauna were investigated, and it was proved that the fishways ensured fish migration in the four water zones. 4 4) The functions of re-connected water zones as fish habitats were verified ; the paddy field works for spawning, feeding and refuge site, and the earth-lined ditch for spawning and wintering site. 5) It was confirmed that the artificial pond located between a river and rice paddies fractionated as an effective mitigation measure in terms of freshwater fishes habitats.
