Research Abstract |
For treatment of neurological diseases including neuropathy, neuropathological examination of biopsied specimen is essential. However, biopsy is invasive in nature, and another noninvasive methods may be needed. MR microscopy is a possible such a candidature method. In this study, we tried to differentiate nerves in 10 μm accuracy. We, first, compared MRI images and of biopsied specimen and found good correlation between them. Trying microscopical MR images, we failed to get good images due to low signal noise ratio from iron deposits and microcirculation. Thus, we applied method based on functional MRI to identified concerning structures and identified lateral geniculate body that can hardly be detected in ordinal MRI techniques. In addition, we developed a method to detect iron deposits in nervous system. In this point, we have not succeeded in MR microscopy, but in nearly feature we can get microscopical MR images of nerve in vivo. We believe that our study from 2001 to 2002 may be useful for future study.
