Research Abstract |
The research project was designed to investigate expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules as well as MMPs and TIMPs during cementogenesis in comparison with expression of these molecules during osteogenesis Osteognenesis was examined focusing on expression of MMP 8 and MMP 13 in 2001. Gene expression of MMP 8 and MMP 13 was compared with that of type I collagen in embryonic and developing postnatal rat mandibles and tibias. MMP 8 was expressed in periosteal cells, osteocytes and flat osteoblasts but was not expressed in cuboidal osteoblasts which expressed type I collagen actively. The expression of MMP 13 was confined to osteocytes and flat osteoblasts. The study demonstrated that osteoblasts and osteocytes express MMP 8 and MMP 13 to degrade ECM. These results were reported in J Histochem Cytochem 50:325-332 (2002) by Sasano and coworkers. Cementogenesis was examined focusing on expression of MMPs and TIMPs in 2002. The study demonstrated that cementoblasts and cementocytes as well as osteoblasts and osteocytes express ECM molecules, MMPs and TIMPs to regulate production and degradation of ECM. These results were reported in J Dent Res 81:673-678 (2002) by Tsubota, Sasano and coworkers.
