Research Abstract

We have investigated the feasibility of the quantitative analysis to the bone regeneration by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). The bone regenerative model was employed to the experimentally produced calvarial defect which is frequently applied for the analysis of osteoconductive biomaterials. Bone regeneration was inteasely reproduced by the quantitative analysis by pQCT. The quantitative analysis by pQCT have overcome a problem of the influence of soft tissue covered by the bone defect, which was unsolved by the formerly used methods. If radiopaque materials such as calcium phosphates compounds including octacalcium phosphate (OCP) was implanted in the calvarial defect, it had been difficult to distinguish the newly formed bone from the radiopaque materials. The analysis by pQCT has enabled to make a distinction between the newly formed bone and radiopaque materials such as calcium phosphates compounds. Therefore, it would be though that pQCT could respectively eval … More uate the newly formed bone formation and the resorption of the implant. The analysis by pQCT enables to examine the periodic and individual bone regenerative procedure. Consequently, the quantitative analysis to the bone regeneration by pQCT could be applied to the evaluation of other bone regenerative model.
For the period of the research, undermentioned evidence was elucidated if the synthetic OCP is implanted into the cranial bone. OCP acts on osteoblasts and/or their closely committed progenitors and serve as a core for initiating bone formation. OCP is resorbed and replaced by newlv formed bone and enhances bone reeeneration. OCP is more resorbable than other commonly used bone graft substitutes of calcium phosphate compounds, while OCP enhances more bone formation than those compounds. As a scaffold of a cytokine, OCP synergically aihances bone regeneration. Above mentioned fruits was published by Journal of Biomedical Materials Research 57(2), 59(1), Oral Diseases 7(4), and Tohoku Univ Dent J 21(2). Less
