Research Abstract

This is a research result in regard with the concepts and activities of encouragement of physical education/sports at three girls' high schools in Osaka and one girls' high school in Aichi where various sports were incorporated in curriculum at the beginnings of women's sports in Japan. As a background to the encouragement of girls' sports, these high schools commonly had these three factors: First, the founder or the first schoolmaster was active in incorporating the physical education. Second, these schools had excellent athletic facilities. And last but not least, there were dedicated teachers/instructors who had highly specialized skill. The purpose (concept) in encouraging girts to do competitive sports was, as is conventionally known, to foster girls withhealthy bodies and minds to bring up children based on the idea of "good wife and wise mother". However, according to further detailed investigation, we found that each school had each purpose and the girts were encouraged to do … More sports not only to have healthy bodies and minds, but also to leam the positive concepts based on the ethical value of each school.
At that time, in the sports mainly done by men, the importance of glorious victory, fruit of efforts, compassion for losers, self-esteem, and spirit of teamwork was emphasized. However, when girts were encouraged to do sports, promotion of physical and spiritual activity, what is now called , the teamwork spirit to improve overall communications ability were only highlighted. That is, even if women did the same sport as men did, it was not considered as one of the activities to have the competitive spirit to pull off a victory or to enhance the athletic skill of individual, as these are the purposes of men's sports. This indicates the possibility that women had an opportunity to be aware of the difference from men and the womanly modesty. In the research activities, we found not only the reports from Journals, but also enormous amount of valuable raw data more than expected. The research report only completes the outlines of our findings, but from now on, we would like to continue to fully investigate the whole data to acquire information and utilize them for our current purpose, development of women's sports.
