Research Abstract |
In this project we have promoted our research to develop an automatic system that produces high-resolution digital elevation models (DEM) from topographic contour maps in practical use, as follows : (1) appling the system to a lot of real topographic maps, we make many improvements of performance in the adopted algorithms ; (2) integrating the system to be an total one, we realize that it could be a user-friendly one. For the first, we developed a new DEM producing method, called the monotone interpolation, that can produces high-resolution DEMs. The method may suppress unnatural configurations in DEMs such as sharp drops in level, bumps and hollows. And we developed a new post-processing method for produced DEMs, called the extended Grimson's regularization method, that can remove the above configurations surviving in them. From the evaluation experiments, we found that it is an effective one. Also, we discussed the adjustment problem of topographic maps that there may be a little different in their borders and it is necessary to adjust their contours to make a unified DEM. For the second, we have continued implementation of the system using graphic-user-interface (GUI) techniques to realize a user-friendly one. Also, we are making an effort that our system may be integrated to be a total and user friendly one. Now we can say that the core of our system producing high-resolution DEMs from topographic contour maps is established. Then we will continue our works to enrich the system and apply it to practical problems of topographic information processing in GIS.
