Research Abstract |
The goal of this study is to find construction methodology of collaborative development environment of metadata and metadata databases for subject gateways. We have investigated the fundamental issues to collaboratively describe metadata and develop metadata databases, which includes a methodology to effectively obtain information about resources, a methodology to share and exchange metadata between subject gateways on the network, and a development of software tools to support metadata description collaboratively. We investigated activities at public libraries on subject gateways and information resource access support using the Internet. We also exchanged information about resource description with international collaborators. Based on these investigations, we developed a Web site which provides information about Dublin Core. We exchanged ideas with public libraries on issues related to subject gateways and metadata through this research. Through these research activities, we have found some important issues for our future research which include utilization of reference service records and collection and publishing of local information. We have published several papers at international conferences and journals through this research. For example, we published a paper on a multilingual subject gateway named Internet Public Library - Asia and its related software tools at an international conference in Beijing in July 2002. We also reported our activities at a conference in Korea, India and Europe.
