Research Abstract

This study dealt with the effects of music on mental health which vary with (a) metamotivational states meaning which levels of arousal people want, high or low, and (b) personality traits meaning what we generally call characters. In the first year, free descriptions were categorized and aspects of daily settings that bring seeking for music-listening were explored. And an attempt was started to find relationships between physiological and psychological time-series changes while music-listening. In the second year, how changes seeking for music-listening along with arousal value of music and with personality trait of listener was researched. And patterns of relationships between physiological and psychological changes while music-listening were analyzed and considered. The main results are as follows : 1. It was suggested that music-listening behavior in daily settings relate to personality traits. 2. It was showed that extraverts often intend to use music as stimulation to operate their arousal to the optimal levels, whereas introverts rarely use music for this purpose. 3. Localizing a self-report instrument for measuring the telic and paratelic states into Japanese was attempted. hanges in metamotivational states while music-listening were measured. 4. It was suggested that activation of autonomic nervous system probably concern the metamotivational states. But this activation seems not to have uniaxial relationship with the felt arousal noted in the metamotivational theory. 5. Some patterns of relationships between mood changes and activation of sympathetic nerve were found from synchronous observation.
