Research Abstract

1.Historical development of conceptualizing trauma related psychiatric are not gender neutral as shown in the diagnosis of hysteria and witch hunting. Current diagnostic classification as well as current research are deeply embedded in the historical constraints and social power relations.
2.Gender comparison of prevalence rate of PTSD, its symptoms and risk factors are critically examined. Gender affects types of trauma, relation to offenders, meaning attached by the victim and others, self body images, reaction by significant persons after traumatic event. Traumatic reactions and symptoms are often acted out along with social gender norms, and that can cause adolescent offensive acts and domestic violence. Anti social personality disorder(PD), borderline PD, Narcissistic PD and Paranoiac PD are often related to trauma experience, but the gender norms give significant influence on how and whom they express emotions and whether they seek professional help. Thus, gender difference of prevalence rate of PDs are socially constructed. Complex PTSD or DESNOS are useful tool to capture chronic complex trauma symptoms but need to be developed and differentiated.
3.An article which examines problems of current legal approach to sexual crimes and provides future orientation was published in a distinguished legal journal. Two English books, "Multiple Personality Disorder Inside Out", "Betrayed ad Boys" were translated. Symposium on trauma and gender was held at the 2^<nd> Japanese Society of Traumatic Stress Studies in 2003. A book "Trauma and Gender" was edited and published from Kongo Publishers in 2004.
