Research Abstract

In order to achieve the research target, we studied new photochromic compounds. After a careful screening of the potential derivatives, two new push-pull perfluoro-diarylethenes were designed and synthesized : asymmetric compound (namely TT) and a non-symmetric one (namely BT). The former comprises two fluorenyl-thiophene moieties, while the latter one fluorenyl-thiophene plus one benzothiophene group. The influence of the benzothiophene on the photochromic properties was clearly observed and demonstrated and explained how it enhances its photoreactivity in solution state, based on VT-NMR experiments, X-Ray data and DFT simulations. A publication is under way. Inspired by these findings, we are now studying on designing new molecular (proton or organic compound) releasing agent based on push-pull photochromic derivatives, incorporating a benzothiophene group.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

As it has been planned, i) we have targeted potentially suitable Diarylethenes for OLED devices, thanks to DFT and TD-DFT. ii) we have also achieved the syntheses of their molecular precursors as well as the ones of analogous derivatives, iii) In particular, we have discovered a very effective photochromic compound.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

As we anticipated, i) we will try to develop a much more photochromically efficient derivative. In the compound, structure would be inspired from the BT model which we studied last year. ii) we will also intend to employ this new derivative as a potential molecular (proton or organic derivative) releasing system.
