This research, as stated in the research plan submitted in March 2013 to the Japan Society for Promotion of Science, is a comparative study between Western and Japanese points of view on the approach to the modern ruins as part of the built environment and how the two different sensitivities can be analyzed in order to reach a more coherent and suitable way to gain back the scattered remnants to the urban life. Moreover a secondary purpose of the research is to point out if the cultural phenomenon of Haikyo (ruins) exploration is part of a more large cultural and popular movement that tries to rejoin and understand the more recent history of Japanese country.
In the first semester of research (November 2013 - May 2014) I focused on the compared analysis between modern ruins perceptions in the West and in Japan in order to create a common examination field and then I produced a scheme of the differences and common features in the cultural approach.
A work method has been implemented to easy the field research and permitting a comparison on the composition, technical and historical aspects of the buildings and most important a continuous analysis of the decay state. The phase of comparative study of common points is still going on and is proving to be a valuable proof of validity for the theoretical framework constituting the hypothesis of the research.
Presentation of the ongoing work has been held in the laboratory once, in order to have a confrontation with other scholars particularly interested on this study field.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have already presented the first results of my research within the laboratory structure with good results in terms of topic feedbacks from both the host professor and the other professors of the department.
All the funds have been used to buy instruments of work like computers, camera and the first research trips.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Once finished the field research it will be again necessary to collect a final bibliography on Western examples of ruins reuse and reconnection with urban environment to implement the comparison scheme within the two different approaches.This study will focus on these aspects of every case: - Architectural and technical description and peculiarities; - Relationship with the anthropic environment and distance from the living city;
- Memory of the ruin in terms of people knowledge and affection;
- State of preservation and future of the ruin (is it going to be destroyed by human hand?);
- Existence of people association for pushing for the preservation or demolition.
One of the main aspects of the comparison will be the analysis of the influence that ruin study has in human perception of architectural space and why Japanese culture approached in a so different way to this topic. The understanding of the current situation will lead to the study or elaboration of possible future scenarios. In the last stage of the research I will try to offer different solutions that might fix critical points and questions in the current debate, proposing concrete reappropriation solutions.These proposals will be presented more in the form of suggestions, to be further developed in other researches. All the final data will be possibly collected in a single publication or a book to be published in both Europe and Japan.
