Research Abstract

In our Priority Area Program on Control of Molecules in Intense Laser Fields, trans-disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary research exchanges and cooperation have intensively been done among the member researchers in order to answer a fundamental question, "Can we control molecular processes and chemical reactions by light?" and to establish methodologies of chemical reaction control in intense light fields. The followings are the research highlights. In Theme 1, "Observation of novel phenomena of molecules, clusters, in condensed matters in intense laser fields," efficient ejection of triatomic hydrogen molecular ions, He, and ultrafast hydrogen atom migration were discovered when hydrocarbon molecules were exposed to ultrashort intense laser fields. In Theme 2, "Establishment theories on dynamics of molecules in intense laser fields and the development of their methodologies," a new theoretical method called "Time-dependent adiabatic state approximation" was developed, and was app … More lied to understand mechanisms of chemical reaction control in intense laser fields. In Theme 3, "Chemical reaction control in intense laser fields by designing optimized laser field," advanced laser sources as well as laser pulse shaping techniques developed in Theme 4 were applied for controlling selective breaking of chemical bonds. In Theme 4, "Generation of ultrashort-pulsed X rays and high-order harmonics and establishment of laser pulse shaping techniques," intense and ultrashort X ray pulses were generated by laser induced plasmas. Significant development was made in methodologies of intensifying high-order harmonics, and light pulses in the attosecond time domain were generated and a auto-correlation technique for measuring the temporal pulse width of attosecond pulses were developed. Furthermore, the Core Members of our Priority Area Program took leadership in establishing a new society, "Japan Light Field Science Society (JILS)," in 2003, for promoting research exchanges among researchers in academic and industrial circles, as well as for activating international research exchanges and researcher exchanges. Thanks to the activities of our Priority Area Program and those of JILS, the newly emerging interdisciplinary research field called "Ultrafast Intense Laser Science" has started to spread from Japan to the rest of the world.
