| Research Abstract |
Although citizen CPR program has been extensively offered for adult population, rate of bystander CPR has been still low worldwide and AHA has newly promoted "CPR in schools" for high school (HS) students. CPR in schools is a classical concept which has been successfully studied since 1950's to date for children aged up to 7 years old. It is not yet known, however, what grade of school students/children are most appropriate to be first introduced of the CPR program. Aim was to compare satisfaction scale of students groups among 1 primary (PS), 3 junior high (JHS) and 4 High schools who participated in CPR training in schools. The study was conducted by use of the Keio Univ. BLS program, which educated CPR for 392 students in 5^<th> grade of a PS, 1798 students in 1^<st> grade of 3 JHSs, 4162 students in 1^<st> grade of 4 HSs in 2002 to 2004 in the university affiliated 8 schools. BLS instructors were invited to schools and all students' skills were evaluated and accepted as national BLS providers with governmental certification. After 3 hours CPR course, the program was evaluated by all students using written questionnaires. Categorical regression analysis with optimal scaling (CATREG) was applied to analyze the relation of students' positive response (enjoyment, confidence) with age and other possible contributing factors. Both enjoyment and confidence was related with age (β=-0.15, P=0.0001), previous CPR training, evaluation of teaching period, practice period and teaching skills of instructors (R^2=0.408, P=0.0001). Thus, age was negatively related with enjoyment and confidence. In conclusion, students in PS are the most appropriate candidates for CPR in schools.
