Research Abstract

本研究では,太古代の生物圏と、それを取り巻く地球化学的環境、これらを規制した地球物理学的要因を明かにした。昨年度掘削したコアを用いた主な成果は次の通りである。
1.Hardey Formation(2.74Ga)中の湖成黒色頁岩:主要と微量をあわせて約60元素の分析を行ったほか、炭素、硫黄の同位体比を測定し、湖に棲む生物とその環境を考察した。硫酸還元バクテリアは棲息せず、光合成生物の存在が示唆された。
2.Tumbiana Formation(2.76Ga)中のストロマイト堆積層:昨年度失敗したため本年度再採掘した。メタン系の細菌の活動が徐々に弱くなって、ストロマトライトが酸化的環境を作り始めていることが地球化学的にも示唆される。
3.Mount Roe Basalt(2.77Ga)の変質帯:浅い海岸近くの海岸で、メタン酸化細菌で特徴づけられる。還元的熱水活動の活発であり、地球の磁場は逆転していて、しかも強い地場が発生していたことを確認した。
4.Mosquito Creek Formation(2.9-3.2Ga)中の黒色頁岩:硫黄同位体比が重い特徴があり、しかもその値は変化に富んでいる。きわめてユニークな海盆であったことは地球化学的にも示唆された。
5.Towers Formation(3.46Ga)中のbasaltおよび黒色頁岩:閃亜鉛鉱地質圧力計を用いて、ピルバラ地域の広域変成作用の温度圧力条件を求めた。この方法は他のコアとも比較でき、興味ある結果が得られた。
6.Towers Formation(3.46Ga)中のMarble Bar Chert:世界最古の地磁気の逆転が確認された。また鉄バクテリアが鉄の酸化と沈殿を促したが、鉄バクテリアの主を特定するまでには至っていない。
