Research Abstract |
DEAFBLINDNESS IS A COMBINED IMPARIMENT OF VISION AND HEARING. TE EXTREMELY LOW INCIDENCE OF DEAFBLINDNESS AND TE HIGH EXPERTISE REQUIRED OF TEACHERS MAKE IT CRUCIAL THAT IN-SERVICE TRAINING FOR TEACHERS BE PROVIDED ON A NATIONAL LEVEL. NEVERTHELESS, THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY TRAINING PROGRAM ON DEAFBLINDNESS IN JAPAN, DESPITE THE GREAT NEEDS EXPRESSED BY TEACHERS IN A SURVEY ON DEAFBLINDNESS. TWO FACTORS ARE RESOPNSIBLE FOR THIS FAILURE - THE DISTANCE AND THE LACK OF TRAINING MATERIALS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP TRAINING MATERIALS NECESSARY FOR TRAINING PROGRAM, ADMINISTRATER A MODEL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR TEACHERS OF STUDENS WITH DEAFBLINDNESS USING THE INTERNET, AND PROPOSE A REALISTIC AND FEASIBLE TRAINING PROGRAM THAT CAN BE USED IN JAPAN TO FULFILL THE UNMET NEEDS. THE FOLLOWING WERE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE FOUR-YEAR PERIOD OF THIS RESEARCH: 1)DEVELOPMENT OF TRAINING CONTENTS (TEXT AND VIDEOS): (1)BASICS (UNDERSTANDING DEAFBLINDNESS, COMMUNICATION METHODS FOR THE DEAFBLIND, SIMULATION EXPERIENCE, HEARING IMPAIRMENT AND VISUAL IMPAIRMENT) (2)SUB-GROUPS OF DEAFBLIND POPULATION (CONGENITAL RUBELLA, CHARGE SYNDROME, USHER SYNDROME, CHILDREN WITH HIGH COGNITIVE CAPACITY) (3)THE BEFORE AND AFTER OF MODEL TRAINING PROGRAM, A CASE STUDY 2)DEVELOPMENT OF A TRAINING PROGRAM FEASIBLE IN JAPAN, COMBINING DISTANCE EDUCATION, A TWO-DAY FACE TO FACE PROGRAM, AND A FOLLOW-UP USING E-MAIL AND AN ON-SITE VISIT BY THE LECTURER. 3)MODEL TRAINING PROGRAM WAS PROVIDED TO A SMALL GROUP OF TEACHERS THREE TIMES. 4)THE RESULTS WERE PRESENTED IN THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE JAPANESE ASSOCIATION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION 5)BASED ON THE EVALUATION OF THE ABOVE TRIALS, A FEASIBLE MODEL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR TEACERS WORKING WITH DEAFBLIND STUDENTS WAS PROPOSED.
