Research Abstract

Three alternative methods for generating crystal-like structures of small particles are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The main results are summarized in the following.
1.Method using the single focused laser beam and its gradient and scattering forces
(a)This method is the easiest to implement but total size of created objects is restricted by a spot-size of the illuminating laser beam.
(b)Availability of 3D regular structure by using the present method is demonstrated experimentally.
2.Method using 3D interference patterns created by four or more laser beam
(a)It is found that, at least, four laser beams are required to create 3D regular interference patterns.
(b)It is theoretically dereived that all fourteen Bravis lattice can be created by four-beam interference pattern.
(c)Experimental implementation and verifications are left for the future works.
3.Method using dynamic modulating of intensity distributions of the illuminating laser beam
(a)By using liquid-crystal-display (LCD) for 2D phase modulator, trapping many particles in arbitrary patterns in 2D becomes available.
(b)By applying phase information to LCD calculated by using phase-retrieval algorithm, we can manipulate particles in arbitrary patterns dynamically and continuously in real time.
