Research Abstract

In 1979, Yazawa introduced a hot pepper CH-19 Pungent' from Thailand and produced the original non-pungent pepper by selfing and selection of CH-19 Pungent' and named it 'CH-19 Sweet'. Yazawa found that 'CH-19 Sweet' fruit is little pungent, but contains capsaicinoid like substances (CLSs, tentatively named CLS-A, CLS-B). Kobata et al. (1998) found that CLS-A is a vanillyl alcohol and CLS-B is a capsaicin analog. CLS-B was named capsiate. Capsinoid was reported to increase body temperature in mice and human. Capsinoid is non-pungent so. that it may be possible to utilize a considerable amount of capsinoid for food and drug applications. In this research project, we got the following results.
1. Establishment of growing method in a resting paddy field.
2. Harvesting time of fruits highly containing capsinoid and condition of the strage-transportation were decided.
3. Capsinoid biosynthetic pathway (phenylalanine-vanillin-vanillyl alcohol-capsinoid) was decided.
4. Capsinoid may be an alterative to capsaicin for the therapeutic treatment of obesity in humans, and implies the existence of a novel VR subtype distinct from nociceptors such as VR1, or presents a new perspective on the functional of VR1.
5. In leaves of 'CH-19 sweet' and the hybrid (F1, CMS strain x 'CH-19 Sweet'), the physiological functional compounds were found out. F1 young plants were useful for vegetable in summer season in Japan.
