Research Abstract

In order to investigate the variation of wood property and growth traits based on the genome information, we have carried out three different types of experiments described below.
(1) Analysis for wood property and growth traits in progeny teat trials using plus trees
Clonal variation of wood density, modulus of elasticity and extractives in heartwood were studied in four trail stands in Kyushu and Shikoku. Repeatability of these traits in the different stands are very stable, it means that wood property in individual trees should be controlled genetically.
(2) Wood properties in plantation forest made by seedlings
We have investigated the variation of wood property of aged trees from plantation forests in Akita prefecture. Age of sample trees ranged from 40 to 110 years old. Woods formed in the initial period of growing stage are not suitable for utilization because of the juvenility of wood cells. Thirty years after planting would be the threshold year, and trees will become to form the stable and favorite woods for timber utilization after that. We have also developed the new method to detect the demarcation between juvenile wood and mature wood.
(3)Development of a system to detect the genotype of seedlings of sugi
Using SSR (simple sequence repeat) markers (synonym microsatellite markers), we have settled the system of clone identification for plus trees and cultivars of sugi. Genotypes of plus trees selected Akita prefecture were determined by this system.
