Research Abstract

We performed a clinical evaluation and a basic research for long term use of a newly developed miniature mixed-flow blood pump (MFP) for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). In the clinical evaluation, 10 patients received a CPB with the MFP. The pump flow was maintained steadily. The MFP was controlled very smoothly at starting and weaning state. Changes in plasma free hemoglobin, lactate dehydrogenase, platelet count, β-thromboglobulin and thrombin-antithrombin complex showed no significant differences from those of a control pump. We believe the MFP had good controllability and less damage on the blood. Left ventricular bypasses were established in 7 goats to evaluate durability and antithrombogenesity. In two goats, experiments were finished after 14 days bypass. Thrombus formations were obtained around a bearing. We believe some improvements of bearings for long term use.
