Research Abstract

In recent years, intelligent transport systems (ITS) have a great attraction so that it is expected to reduce traffic accidents. This study investigates and develops effective protocols for ITS communications.
At first, in ITS communications, vehicles which are nodes exit in a relatively narrow area. Thus, multicast is a effective way, which one node can transmit a data to multiple nodes at one. However, it has some problems of packet loss due to mobility of nodes between base stations and latency due to additional traffic to update route information. For those problems, we proposed a multicast-based way, i.e. Advanced Join protocol. Advance Join protocol where a base station as a proxy of nodes sends a priori join and delivery requests to a multicast group. This study evaluated Advanced Join protocol to find some requirements to improve, which are reliable and low-latency transmission to moving nodes, reducing latency until receiving all packets, retransmission method for ad hoc network and so forth.
Then, this study proposed direct and relay vehicle protocol (DRVC) to achieve low latency and high reliability in an area covered by a base station. Simulation evaluation showed that DRVC accommodates 10 vehicles while the traditional DSRC does 4. Furthermore, a vehicle grouping communication protocol called R-VGMP is also proposed. R-VGMP is TDMA-based and achieves high reliability by building a vehicle group with the *aster car, which control the group network. Simulation study shows that reachability rate of the control packet in vehicle grouping phase is more than 95% if the vehicle density is up to 20 (vehicles/km) per lane, which higher than a simple protocol of IEEE802.11 due to suppression of data collision.
