| Research Abstract |
After the end of the War between Japan and China in 1945, many Japanese soldiers remained in Manchuria, and were employed respectively by Nationalists and Communists who were fighting a civil war. Those who were employed by Chinese Communists contributed much to PLA and PRC. However, due to the well-known political reason, the historical facts haven't been uncovered. This study, mainly relied upon Chinese materials obtained through fieldwork, is to unfold the historical facts concerning Japanese soldiers employed by Chinese Communists.
For this purpose, since April 2002, with the cooperation of scholars from China, the author has conducted intensive investigations in Chinese mainland and Taiwan, and has obtained many primary documents. And then, the author has published "Japanese in Northeast PLA's Medical Teams" and "Continual Employment of Japanese in China after WWII : the background and meaning of the research". has finished the first draft of a book on the subject. In the draft, besides policy formation process concerning Japanese employed in Communist-controlled area, the author also shed some light on the education and administration of those employed, the reward for their performance, and their repatriation. Part of the research result has been selected into the 5^<th> International Symposium on History of Republic of China, scheduled to be held in July 2006 in China, and another part will become a thesis report in the 56th National Academic Conference of Modern China Studies. And in the past 4 years, the author has done some other research, and published some papers of other subjects, which broadens the author's outlook as a scholar.
To further the research, from now on, the author intends to enlarge the research from Japanese soldiers to all the Japanese who have been employed in both Communists-controlled and Nationalist-controlled areas in China. If the research can be done as planned, the author believe, the whole picture of Japanese employed in China after WWII will be unfolded. Less
