Research Abstract

This study is mainly concerned with the major issues and characters of internationalization of curricula in higher education institutions in recent years in China, Japan and the Netherlands as well as some other countries. By making a comparative analysis of curricula provided for international students and curricula with international subjects, perspectives or approach offered in both English and the local language, the research project identifies three types of internationalized curriculum, describes the similarities and different aspects of how the three countries internationalized their university curricula and met the needs of different regions and social, economic and higher education systems. Besides, based on the comparative study of internationalization of curricula in higher educations in individual countries, the project especially examines the current situation of internationalization of university curriculums in Japan, discusses issues at both policy level and institutional level. In the research, it is emphasized that the internationalization of university curriculums at home-within domestic Japanese higher educational institutions, much progress has been achieved with an increase in the number of international students over past decades, however, no significant progress has been made in facilitating the internationalization of university curriculums abroad-transnational or cross-border curriculums, due to the rigid regulation of the government. Comparative with China and the Netherlands, recently the internationalization of university curriculums in Japan is moving from the traditional language/culture-oriented type to a more intensive academic/professional one, with a further emphasis on internationally recognized professional programs and certificates, in particular in some private institutions.
