Research Abstract

The stress(p)-strain(ε) relationship of clays under the one dimensional consolidation is influenced by numerous factors ; strain-rate(ε ),temperature(T), disturbance and stress path, etc. In this research project, ε and Tare considered as the major factors, and their effects are studied.
1 On the basis of the published data, p-ε -ε^^〜 relationships are developed; the results are explained by the isotach-theory proposed by S uklje('57).
2 The results of separated type consolidometer, carried out at the Port & Harbour Researach Inst.,are discussed. In this type of test, the soil layer is divided into five interconnected subspecimens. At the same time, a study is made of the in-situ p-ε curves measured at the construction site of the Kansai International Airport.
3 The combined effect of ε^^〜 and T has been qualified, and the yield stress can be described as a function of ε^^〜 and T. Moreover, it is shown that the p-ε curves obtained at various ε^^〜 and T coincid on the conditions of Eq. given by this study.
4 The temperature's rise from 20 to 80℃ might produce the decrease in void ratio that would be caused by the secondary compression more than 10,000 years and that thermal effects would be higher for clays exhibiting lower rates of secondary compression than those of higher rates.
