Research Abstract

There are so many thesises on each temles and shrines, but it is rather few about their precincts and surrounding area and the relation between the religious architecture and its exterior space.
In this study it is referred that how was the first stage in the inner space and the exterior space of them. In the present cities the economic thought took the priority to the conservation of historical remaining examples. As a result in the center of the cities the exterior space and the atmosphere were largely changed into modern political and economical and commercial areas.
Such increasingl tendencies made most of the central part of the cities into vacant and non-living area. In Japan although traditional religious space was restricted, it must be revaluated beyond its religious meanings and must have various meaning in the city as an open space instead of European plaza.
In order to appreciate correctly in making and planning a city or town, there must be data failed to notice in detail how important precincts changed including historical architecture.
In this study it is reconsidered about Osaka-temmaguh with Tenjin-matsuri festival and Tenjinbashi Street, Shitennohji Temple precincts and Sumiyoshi-taisha in Osaka.
In Tokyo it is referred to Sensohji Temple and Asakusa-jinjya and their festival, Kaneiji Temple and its precinct, Hiejinjya Shrine with Sannohmatsuri festival and so on. The precincts in Osaka and Tokyo are now changed a great deal, so as an old castle town well conserved in the Edo period it is taken up Kanazawa centering around Kannonin Temple and its town.
As a result it was made clear that the importance and the relation between religious precincts and the people's life were deeply concerned in every aspect.
Without this people's life could not complete, in this sense religious precincts left great footprint in the Japanese city space.
