Research Abstract

The present study aims to generate new type of nano-structures on metal surface or carbon materials by atomic rearrangement in the high energy particle collision field. Three different kinds of research works have done in this project as described in the followings.
(1)We have reported that nano-sized structures appear on the electron exist surface of gold, silver and copper foils by self-organization process under electron irradiation at low temperatures (Materials Transactions 43 (2002) 646). In the present study, new types of self-organized structures were found to be formed on nickel and iron surfaces irradiated with 400 keV electron. Annealing experiment was given to the iron foil and found to be stable up to 823 K.
(2)We have systematically investigated the irradiation-induced amorphization of graphite and proposed a dislocation accumulation model to explain the amorphization process (Phil.Meg.Lett.82(2002)401).
(3)We have investigated a recovered sample after shock-compression of C_<60> fullerene by means of scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that the structure of the recovered-sample depends on a distance from the center. We have found the generation of spherical hollow spheres of several μm in diameter on an internal surface of the recovered sample(Chem.Phys.Lett.362(2002)47). The generation mechanism of the spherical hollow particle through a liquid phase was proposed (Materials Transactions 45 (2004) 5).
