Research Abstract

The diffusion behaviour at the interface of material cladding plain, low carbon steels and high carbon alloy steels has been analyzed using the DICTRA software developed by the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. In the selection of cladding materials, the chemical potential of carbon at the selected alloy compositions was obtained using the calculated phase diagrams, and a combination was employed wherein the carbon atoms diffused from the base material, having a lower C content, to the cladding layer, having a higher C content. For example, the cladding material for plain carbon steel containing 0.046% C of a 18Cr-8Ni stainless steel with 0.06% C exhibits an up-hill diffusion for carbon from the base metal to the cladding steel at T=1,200 K, resulting in the precipitation of the Cr23C6 carbide at the materials interface. Such anomalous diffusion behaviour can be explained by the fact that the diffusion is derived from the chemical potential gradient of carbon rather than that of the difference in concentration. In the present work, similar combinations of cladding materials were investigated, and the diffusion behaviour was analysed.
