Research Abstract |
We examined ammo acid mutations in dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) of Pneumocystis carinii (Pc) isolated from 34 patients with Pc pneumonia in Japan. DHFR mutations (Ala67Val, Cys166Tyr) were observed in the two different patients. However, they were successfully treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Pc or Cryptococcus neoformans (Cn) carriage was determined in 78 immunocompromised subjects with or without human immunodeficiency virus. Pc colonization in the respiratory tract was round for this population, while no patients colonized with Cn were experienced. We started cohort study including HIV patients in Thailand (Lampang Provincial Hospital) in August 2003. Amino acid substitutions of the drug-target enzymes in the Pc will be analyzed with the samples of sputum induction.
