Research Abstract |
Life-style related diseases like hypertension and diabetes affict tens of millions of people in Japan. A support system making it possible to control and prevent these deceases effectively in the home is necessary. For the sake of such a system, we have conducted basic research on information technology (IT) and various kinds of sensors. Such factors as nutrition, daily activity, rest (sleep), and its circadian rhythm define life style. Our research for 2002 concerned nutrition, sleep and metal stresss. It involved the development of a cup called a salimeter to measure urinary salt excretion volumes automatically. On the basis of electrical resistance, a salimeter was used to measure the specific electrical conductivity of salt in urine. This method demonstrated a good coefficient of correlation (r=0.71) between estimated salt-excretion values and actually measured 24-h urinary salt excretion. To measure daily activity and rest we developed a stress-tachometer with an accelerometer incorporated in a wristwatch-type heart-rate (HR) recorder. Level of body activity was observed by acceleration. Measurements made with a finger-ring-style oxygen-saturation (SPO_2) meter showed that the oxygen saturation of people on board aircraft dropped more than was expected (average of -2.4±1.7<SD>%). As part of our 2003 research, we developed a highly accurate, double-cuff blood-pressure recorder and a pendant-style electrocardiograph. Items transmissible by mobile telephone (PHS) are blood pressure, body weight, salt-intake volume, activity (acceleration), and event-electrocardiograms. At present, in cooperation with the kanagawa Prefectural Preventative Medicine Association, we are studying local applications.
