Research Abstract

Measurement of CBF, cerebral blood volume (CBV), cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), and CMRO_2 by positron emission tomography (PET) with ^<15>O-labeled carbon dioxide (C^<15>O_2) or ^<15>O-labeled water 8H_2^<15>O), ^15O-labeled carbon monoxide (C^<15>O), or ^<15>O-labeled oxygen (^<15>O_2) is useful for diagnosis and treatment planning in cases of cerebrovascular disease. The measured values theoretically depend on factors that differ between PET centers. PET data of 70 healthy volunteers from 11 PET centers were analyzed. Steady-state method was used in 7 centers for C^<15>O_2 and in 8 centers for ^<15>O_2. Non-steady-state method was used in the other centers. The partition coefficient of water varied from 0.8 to 1.0 depending on the centers. Overall mean ± SD values for cerebral cortical regions were : CBF = 44.4 ± 6.5 mL/100 mL/min ; CBV = 3.8 ± 0.7 mL/100 mL ; OEF = 0.44 ± 0.06 ; CMRO_2 = 3.3 ± 0.5 mL/100 mL/min ; the variations being acceptable small, suggesting the practicability of building a normal database for ^<15>O-labeled gas sturdy. The CBF image of each subject was further spatially normalized into the standard Talairach coordinates system using SPM99, and the other three parametric images were transformed with the same transformation. This procedure created the average normal images of each parameter in the standard coordinates system, which may provide normal values for each brain region in the image format.
