Research Abstract

The location and direction of the vessels and nerves around the tongue and the submandibular region was investigated in the fresh cadavers of miniature swine. A pair of vessels branch off from the main vessels of the neck was identified under tongue and was presumed as the vessels supplying it. Since angiography and dye injection examination indicated that the whole tongue was vascularized with a single pair of the artery and the vein of one side, transplantation with microvascular anastomosis is judged to be achievable. A pair of nerve bundle, which was presumed to innervate internal and external tongue muscle, was also identified at the undersurface of the tongue.
Sympatric autotransplantation was performed then. Although the circulation of the blood flow in the grafted tongue was good enough and postoperative wound healing was uneventful, movement of the tongue was lost and the swallowing ability was severely disturbed.
In the cases of sympatric allotransplantatioh, survival more than six month was not achieved. Consequently, evaluation of the reinnervation and the recovery of the muscle movement of the grafted tongue could not be investigated.
Induction of the specific tolerance on the recipient animal with or without a major histocompatibility barrier by short time dosage with immunosuppressant was not attempted in this experimental period.
