Research Abstract

The morphological changes of the basement membranes below placodes and the underlying collagen fibrils during development were studied with electron microscopy, using amphibian as materials. Epidermal basement membrane and the collagen fibrils in the body wall of Cucumaria frondosa were also studied to elucidate the basic conformation of the basement membrane, and to make the process of the formation of collagen layer clear.
The polygonal framework, which was similar to the hypothesis by Yurchenco (1986), was found in the epidermal basement membrane of Cucumaria. We were possibly successful to show the basic framework with type IV collagen. Similar morphologies have been seen in the epidermal basement membranes of Rana during metamorphosis, and also in the basement membranes of mouse and chick during development.
In the present study, it became clear that the arrangement of the collagen fibrils in the body wall of echinoderms differed from those in the mammalian dermis. The data in the present study can be thought as the basic information to the studies of the basement membrane of the tooth germ.
