Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of social support, psychological, and physical states among Japanese women with breast cancer and their spouses, and to assess changes in social support, psychological and physical states among them. Methods A convenience sample of Japanese women with breast cancer and their spouses were participated in this longitudinal study. Data were collected six times : before (Time I), three months (Time II), six months (Time III), 12 months (Time IV), 18 months (Time V), and 24 months after breast surgery (Time VI). Two instruments with established reliability and validity were used : the Japanese versions of General Health Questionnaire and the Interpersonal Relationship Inventory, which consists of Support, Reciprocity, and Conflict. ces in support between the women and their spouses before and after breast surgery. Repeated measures ANOVAs showed significant differences in physical states of women with breast cancer. Post-hoc analysis identified significant differences between before and after three months, before and six months, before and 12 months after breast surgery. Significant correlations were found between psychological states and physical states among women with breast cancer before and after breast surgery, and between psychological states and conflict among their spouses before and after breast surgery. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that physical states and conflict were influencing factors on psychological states of women with breast cancer. The results suggested there were significant relationships of social support, psychological and physical states among Japanese women with breast cancer and their spouses. Therefore, healthcare professionals need to care for breast cancer patients and their spouses with considering social support as an important factor to help them in their lives before and after breast surgery.
