Research Abstract |
(1)Realization of the high-speed virtual bronchoscopy and free real-time navigation Virtual endoscopy was now clinically using based on the recent development of three-dimensional image processing technology by digital volume data X-ray CT.However, its navigating performance on the display does not have enough speed compared to real optical endoscopy. We applied volume data of chest CT to UNIX dased workstation "ONIX 2", Silicon Graphics Incorporate (SGI) for more speedy virtual navigation. High-speed virtual bronchoscopy system was realized on ONIX2. Then one of the co-author Kensaku MORI developed new virtual endoscopy engine on the Windows based PC as a generally distributed operating system. Speedy virtual navigation, but was not based on the animation, comparable to real optical bronchoscopy was by dual CPU calculation with Open GL video card. (2)The substantial function of a virtual bronchoscopy and clinical application In order to use patient's 3-D CT data with DICOM format which i

s the international de facto standard in medicine, virtualized bronchoscopy system was customized. Development of a function unique to this system was also featured to make search through the advanced narrowing part of the bronchus and J turn movement. The name of a bronchus orifice could be automatically displayed by computer processing based on the knowledge of the bronchial tree. Intellectual diagnostic imaging support could be offered to the diagnostician. Furthermore, the name quiz function for a bronchial orifice was provided as the educational tool. (3)Conclusion Established system will be useful in the following situations. 1.Teaching resource to study on bronchial anatomy in medical education. 2.Teaching Materials of bronchoscopy in bed side learning for medical student 3.Teaching materials of virtual reality in Medicine and of Intellectual Diagnostic Imaging Support 4.Skill up tool of bronchoscopy for doctors in training. 5.Informed consent sake for the patient and his family 6.Pre-bronchoscopic virtual examination for the safe and smooth examination for better patient care The virtual bronchoscopy by the volume rendering method could be developed as a diagnostic support system of the next generation.
