Research Abstract	日本においては他者の喚起が自己定義に不可欠であるが、北米では他者の存在は自己定義を妨害するとする仮説を検証するために、自由選択事態での認知的不協和現象を検討した。先行研究に基づいて、被験者は音楽についての市場調査という名目で実験に参加した。まず、最新のポップミュージックのCD、30が示され、その中でもっていないくて欲しいものを10選ぶように告げられた。そして被験者はその10枚にほしい順に順番をつけた。しばらく他の質問に答えていると調査者がきて、「スポンサーが謝礼にCDを一枚差し上げるといっているが、この2枚しか今在庫がないので」、どちらかを選ぶようにいい、被験者は選択した。この2枚は、実は当初の順位で5番目と6番目のものである。他の質問に答えたあと、被験者は、もう一度、今度はCDショップを出たあとのCDに対する印象を聞きたいという名目で当初の10枚のCDに対する好みの順番をつけるように求められた。5番目と6番目のCDに対する選択後の好みの変化が主要な従属変数である。自己記述課題と同様、他者の関与を喚起させるために、選択に先立って重要な他者を思い起こさせた。つまり、だれでもよいから自分にとって大切な人を思い起こしてその人のことをできるだけたくさん書き立たせた。予想に一致して、選んだCDに対する好みが増し、選ばなかったCDに対する好みが減るという認知的不協和現象は、日本の場合は他者を喚起した条件でのみで、また、アメリカの場合は、そのような操作を加えない統制条件でそれぞれ最も顕著に見られた。
