Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The research topics I was engaged in during the fiscal year were the following:
1)As a continuation of the research from the previous year, we further investigated the photodissociation dynamics of the H_2He+ molecular ion when exposed to an intense femtosecond laser pulse, focusing on the role of vibrational kinetic coupling and the role of non-adiabatic effects. The research results are about to be submitted for publication.
2) A theoretical framework for the high accuracy, variational simulation of laser induced rovibrational/alignment dynamics of polyatomic molecules was developed. The developed method and computer code was applied to the H_2He+ molecule with success. Additionally, based on the simulations, it was found that by appropriate alignment control, nuclear spin-isomer separation can be realized for ultrashort alignment sensitive experiments. A manuscript about the developed methods and obtained results is being prepared for publication.
3) In a joint research with an experimental group from Austria, we took part in the investigation of the mechanism of the slow deprotonation process in ethylene and acetylene dications produced by strong field ionization. Our research results were recently accepted for publication. 4) We also joined a research project related to the spectroscopy of the high lying Rydberg states of XeKr, in which our work was to identify the origin of the ion-core switching process occurring for certain Rydberg states. The research results are about to be submitted for publication.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Although the research progress was slower than originally planned due to unforeseen technical difficulties (in the construction of electronic potential energy and dipole moment surfaces), several exciting research results were achieved.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

It seems the most beneficial way to continue with our research is to further apply the theoretical framework and computer code developed for simulating laser induced spatial alignment of polyatomic molecules. In the case of triatomic molecules such as H_2He+ where full-dimensional simulations are feasible, investigating the limitations of commonly used approximations in alignment dynamics simulations seems to be a good direction, along with further research on efficient alignment based spin-isomer separation.
