Outline of Annual Research Achievements

My research focuses on sedimentation countermeasures in general and sediment bypass tunnels (SBT) as an effective and ecologically favorable measure in particular. SBTs route the incoming sediments into the dam tailwater during floods. Main drawbacks of SBTs are the high investment and maintenance costs. The high invert abrasion caused by fast sediment-laden flows is the most challenging problem affecting all tunnels. To estimate the invert abrasion a prediction model was developed in my PhD thesis and enhanced over the last 6 months. Furthermore, the model is compared to a Japanese prediction model widely applied in engineering practice.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

I have progressed more than originally planned by publishing 4 scientific papers plus one paper in revision.
Furthermore, Asahi, Miwa, and Koshibu SBT were visited as expected and data collection and close collaboration with dam owners developed nicely.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the next fiscal year I’d like to focus my research on reservoir sedimentation in general to compare the different methods on a worldwide scale. Furthermore Per-reviewed publications are planned on an abrasion prediction model comparison. Finally, further tasks involve consulting of new SBT projects in Japan, support of new Bachelor and Master students and participation at International Congresses.
