Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Given that in my PhD thesis I explored the dispatch of the Ryukyuan missions to Edo during the nineteenth century, in this new project I approached the diplomatic relationship between Edo/Tokyo and the Ryukyus from a broader perspective focussing my attention on the changing nature of Japanese diplomacy during the transition from the early-modern to modern eras. This study aims to demonstrate that the Ryukyu kingdom played a significant and hitherto unacknowledged role in Japanese politics during the crucial phase between the final years of rule of the Tokugawa shoguns and the establishment of the new Meiji government.
This research is mainly based on the philological analysis of Edo/Meiji period documents. As soon as I started my research at Hosei University, I was able to engage in advanced research immediately and during these 6 months I revised the content of my PhD thesis in effort to transform it in a publishable manuscript. I intend to finish this revision in a few months and then send the manuscript to my advisors.
During these 6 months, I have also wrote 2 articles in Japanese and now I am currently writing one in English.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

I could obtain most documents necessary for accomplishing my study at the Hosei University Institute of Okinawan Studies. Professors affiliated with this institute were able to provide additional guidance and help in realizing this project. Then, I went to Okinawa to meet with Professor Maehira Fusaaki who gave me an invaluable guidance for the continuation of my studies. Therefore, I found a very confortable environment to realize my project. So far, I am satisfied with my research progress.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In one or two months, I intend to finish my PHD thesis revision and send it to my advisors. Then, if they are satisfied with my changes and reviews, I intend to look for a publisher. Because I am writing my book in English, I plan to contact a number of American editors.
In the meantime, in June (2015) I am planning to present my research results at a Conference held by the Society of Okinawan Studies at the Okinawa International University.
Additionally, given that in these months I found new important and previously unexplored primary sources about my research argument, I intend to continue with my research (interpretation of documentary sources) and publish the result of this work in a new article in Japanese in the near future.
