Outline of Annual Research Achievements

FY 2015 had been very productive. The Fellow was able to present the initial findings in several conferences and got important feedbacks. The field survey/interviews conducted in Germany and Netherlands had also been very fruitful. Valuable insights had been gained including, among others: (1) how the Green Infrastructure (GI) concept and the ecosystem-based approaches to flood risk mitigation are being implemented in these reference countries; (2) these countries' experiences with natural detention basins as a strategy to reduce flood vulnerability; and (3) the technical aspects of detention basins, as well as the standards/norms and policy approaches to support and promote their use. All this knowledge is currently being applied in the study area in Kinuta Park, Setagaya, where modelling is being done to assess the potential contribution of the park in reducing flood vulnerability (and therefore flood loss and damage) by acting as a temporary detention basin during extreme flood events. Model simulation is currently ongoing.
Aside from its flood regulatory services, other ecosystem services of the park are also quantitatively assessed (e.g., carbon sequestration, heat island effect mitigation, air pollution reduction, wild life conservation, UV protection, and recreational and cultural value). In this regard, a number of surveys had been conducted: temperature surveys, questionnaire survey of the park visitors and tree survey. The last survey is still on-going but already in its final stage.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Interactions with experts from Germany, Netherlands and Japan have been crucial to the attainment of research goals and targets. They helped to streamline the research work and provide clearer focus to the study. The collaboration with Kokushikan University and the Association for Rainwater Storage and Infiltation Technology-Japan (ARSIT-Japan) also greatly facilitated the survey work at Kinuta Park. Government units (Tokyo Metropolitan Governmnet, Kinuta Park Adminitration and Setagaya Ward Office) have also been very helpful and supportive.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The study is now in the model finalization and refinement stage. For this, a final round of survey will be conducted both for verification of results and for filling data gaps. The latter part of this fiscal year will be dedicated to the active publication of research results. Presentation of results in conferencess is also planned.
