Research Abstract |
Since the first wooden tablets(Mokkan was excavated at Heijo palace site in 1961, over 200,000 wooden tablets have been researched in Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. In this project, we linked the archive of wooden tablets with the latest information technology e.g. character recognition and information technology, made four core researches on 1) an easily-digitization system of the information of wooden tablets 2) a database of the character images on wooden tablets 3) databases to support reading wooden tablets 4) an automatic recognition system for characters written on wooden tablets, and built "Mokkan Jiten" that is a database of character images on wooden tablets and "Mokkan Shop' that is a support system to read characters on wooden tablets. "Mokkan Jiten" contains color/monochrome/infrared/sketched images for 1,200 character categories / 20,000 character patterns. "Mokkan Shop" consisting of an image processing system to extract ink parts of wooden tablets, a character recognition system for damaged character patterns and a context processing system with the newest database of historical place/person/product name enhanced the value of decoding wooden tablets. Finally, we succeeded in practical realization of an innovative automanc-recognition-system to read character patterns on partially defective/too much damaged/imperfect condition wooden tablets. "Mokkan Jiten" and "Mokkan Shop" that are the effective components to build the COE for wooden tablets and other Excavated Historical Documents, and they have the potential to make the progress of the research in history and archaeology. In order to open our achievements of this project and other information of wooden tablets, we made a web page "Mokkan Hiroba" in the web site of Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. Also, we published "Nihon Kodai Mokkan JIten" that introduces the "Heijo-kyu Mokkans" as the paper-version of "Mokkan Jiten".
