Research Abstract

It is presumed that multiply handicapped persons have some disorders in the function for recognizing the human face. From this view point, we attempted to investigate the cognitive processes in multiply handicapped persons using face specific ERPs.
54 multiply handicapped persons were used for the subjects. Five kinds of stimuli, (1)a photograph of the face of unknown person, (2)a photograph of the face of nurse or doctor etc. who spend long time with subject' in daily life, (3)a photograph of the face of a dog, (4)a photograph of a round wall clock and (5)a photograph of a star mark, were presented on a monitor screen, six times for each, in a random order. Only star mark was presented with pink color, for making subjects to pay attention.
EEG were recorded from scalp electrodes at Fz,Cz,Pz,T5 and T6 sites. Two ERP components, P170 which is sensitive for face stimuli and P300 which is elicited by the deviated stimuli from context, were investigated.
Using "Ohshima classification scale", … More subjects were classified in terms of intelligence level. P170 showed larger amplitudes in the subjects who have less intelligence deficits. In contrast, P300 component was observed even in the lower intelligence subject.
Relations between appearance of these components and mental ages of subjects were also analyzed. Consistent relations between appearance of P170 and mental age could not be observed. The appearance of P300 was not related with the degree of mental age.
The degree of response (responsibility) of the subjects in daily life were classified in three degrees based upon the judgment of hospital staffs. The amplitudes of P 170 were larger in the higher responsibility group than in the lower responsibility group.
Cognitive processes of multiply handicapped persons evaluated with ERPs (especially face specific P170)were related closely to the degrees of responsibility in daily life. It was suggested that the observations in daily life are important for the evaluation of the multiply handicapped persons, together with using other standard evaluation tests Less
