| Research Abstract |
The present study aimed to acquire basic data for constructing an emergency nursing service system allows the development of pioneering nursing activities. An emergency nursing service system in 1 medical facility was examined using action research methods with the cooperation of individuals actually involved in nursing for conducting interventions on various problems and situations in emergency nursing. Results of a preliminary survey and process analysis of small-group activities revealed various characteristics of emergency nursing and competencies required for the nurses involved.
Nursing care for emergency patients comprised ""dentifying and solving causes of threats" and "supporting reactions to threats". These were considered to represent the main concepts of nursing care for emergency patients. Nurses utilized a peculiar nursing service style to provide nursing care efficiently and effectively in a short period of time. For nursing service style, 4 patterns were observed : "role sharing and collaboration type" ; "simultaneous progression type" ; "encountering type" ; and "support upon detection type". Furthermore, nursing care for emergency patients was provided by cooperation among nurses, so a function of mutual complementation was achieved in nursing care.
Various competencies were required for nurses involved in emergency care. Competency clusters were classified into : "achievement-driven group" ; "cooperative human relationship group" ; "leadership group" ; and "self-educating group". Among these, "cooperative human relationship group" was identified as the key competency for nurses involved in emergency nursing, and this was found to comprise competency dictionaries including "empathy", "sincerity", "communication ability", "relationship-building ability" and "conflict management ability". Verification of the competency model is needed in future.
