Research Abstract

This research attempts to gain a fundamental knowledge of residents' preference pattern in public library services given the rapidly changing environment of ICT. Our research consists of three part : computer based interviews with 470 visitors to Ibaraki Prefectural Library and the adaptive conjoint analysis (ACA) regarding internet service in public library, survey of residents preference concerning six aspects of public library services conducted in Tsukuba City, and survey of Narita City residents revised from the second research. Our empirical results can be summarized as follows :
1)The ability in using the internet and the purpose of the visit lead to different results in the average importance of "staff assistance" and "site restrictions", while "privacy" was commonly regarded as a principal attribute. Based on these users' preferences, we discussed preferable location and environment for computers of the internet service in a public library. It is suggested that the targeted segment should be clarified to account for distinct preferences of various users.
2)The preference pattern between library users and non users are almost similar although non users evaluate reference service and physical environment are more important. Socioeconomic variables and library's usage are ineffective for describing difference of residents' preferences.
3)Using hierarchical Bayse estimation method, we have found that the residents can categorize to three groups : utilization for work, utilization for reading, and utilization for daily life. The usage of internet affects preferences significantly although traditional media usage such as television and books/magazines don't.
