Research Abstract |
At the beginning of the research we listed up the grammatical categories used in the linguistic typology and investigated which categories can be applied to describe the Early New High German grammar. As expected, verbal categories proved to be the main categories for this purpose, but the category "number", which is at the same time a verbal and nominal category, proved to be useful, too. We collected the example sentences concerning the category "number" and analyzed them. We found interesting examples showing the disagreement about the number not only from the Early New High German period but also from Middle High German and New High German period. We then collected and analyzed the examples showing the nominalization, which is the process from the verbal to the nominal category. In order to explain the historical changes from the viewpoint of the linguistic typology, it proved to be important to investigate the notion "productivity", too, although in this research we could not deal with this notion fully. In this research we could show the possibility of describing the diachronic linguistic changes in terms of the typological changes. But it seems that further investigations are necessary to carry out the description of the Early New High German grammar.
