Our study is the investigation of the thought and action of Chinese intellectuals in the 20^<th> century through a special example of the May Fourth Movement Intellectuals represented by Hu Shi. We set up three periods (1917-51, 1951-78, 1978-present), and focus the sameness and difference of these three Chinese intellectual generations. In the first year, we have collected and collocated date=base of these Chinese intellectuals> In the second year, we have studied the social, cultural, and ideological positions of these Chinese intellectuals and grasped the conclusions as follows; 1.On the thought of Chinese intellectuals at the 20^<th> century We study the Chinese intellectual history written by Hu Shi and the influence of American Pragmatism on the view of Hu Shi. 2.On the ideological connection between the May Fourth Movement Intellectuals represented by Hu Shi and the new intellectuals in contemporary China We analyze the modern educational institutions built in China by Hu Shi's groups. 3.About the May Fourth Movement Intellectuals represented by Hu Shi and contemporary Chinese thought We study the process of the acceptance, reaction, and modification of western liberalism in modern china, especially we pay attention to the spread of Hu Shi's liberalism after 1978 political reform in china.
